NQ futures are the E-mini Nasdaq-100 contract traded on the CME, tracking the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq. Each contract carries a multiplier of $20 per index point, so a one-point move in the Nasdaq-100 is worth $20 to whoever holds the contract. The minimum price move, one tick, is 0.25 points, worth $5. Traders reach for NQ instead of the S&P's ES contract when they want concentrated exposure to large-cap tech and a market that tends to swing harder in both directions.

What is the NQ futures contract?

NQ is a standardized, exchange-listed futures contract on the Nasdaq-100 index. It trades on the CME's Globex platform nearly around the clock, settles in cash (no one delivers 100 stocks at expiration), and rolls quarterly like most equity index futures, with the front month usually the one carrying volume.

The Nasdaq-100 itself is weighted toward technology, communication services, and consumer discretionary names. A handful of companies, the largest by market cap, make up a big share of the index. That concentration is the whole reason NQ behaves differently from a broad-market contract like ES.

NQ contract specs: multiplier and tick value

The number that matters most is the multiplier: $20 per index point on standard NQ. If the Nasdaq-100 index moves from 20,000 to 20,050, that's a 50-point move, worth $1,000 per contract. Compare that to ES, the S&P 500 E-mini, which carries a $50 multiplier, so the same 50-point move on the S&P would be worth $2,500, though the S&P rarely moves 50 points in a session the way the Nasdaq-100 sometimes does.

Tick size on NQ is 0.25 points, and each tick is worth $5 (0.25 x $20). On ES, that same 0.25-point tick is worth $12.50 (0.25 x $50). Neither number tells you which contract is riskier on its own. You have to look at how many ticks each one typically moves in a day, which is really a question about volatility, not contract design.

NQ futures vs ES: comparing volatility

Here's the part that trips people up. The Nasdaq-100 trades at a much higher index level than the S&P 500, roughly three to four times as high, while NQ's multiplier is less than half of ES's. So you can't just compare point moves side by side and call it a day. What matters is dollar volatility per contract: how much money moves per contract on a normal trading day.

On most sessions, NQ's dollar swing per contract runs higher than ES's. Tech-heavy indexes tend to react harder to rate expectations, growth repricing, and earnings from a small number of mega-cap names. That's why exchanges typically set higher margin requirements to hold an NQ position than an ES position of the same size. More potential movement per contract means more capital at risk per contract, in both directions.

Who trades NQ instead of ES?

Traders who want a bet closer to big tech than the whole market gravitate to NQ. If your view is about AI spending, semiconductor demand, or how growth stocks react to a rate decision, NQ gives you exposure closer to that specific story than a broad, sector-diversified S&P contract does.

Day traders sometimes prefer NQ because a given account size can capture more dollar movement per contract, which can mean fewer contracts needed to hit a target, though it also means the same account can lose money faster if the trade goes the other way. Meanwhile, traders who want diversified exposure across financials, healthcare, energy, industrials, and consumer staples alongside tech tend to stay with ES, since the S&P 500 spreads risk across eleven sectors instead of concentrating it in one.

Micro NQ for smaller accounts

The CME also lists MNQ, the Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100, at one-tenth the size of standard NQ. The multiplier is $2 per point, and a tick is $0.50. It gives traders with smaller accounts, or anyone who wants finer position sizing, a way to trade the same index without taking on a full-size contract's dollar swings.

The tradeoff is the same one that shows up everywhere in futures: smaller contracts mean finer position sizing but also smaller absolute gains or losses per tick. Neither size changes the underlying volatility of the Nasdaq-100 itself. It only changes how much of that volatility lands on your account per contract.
